Daniel Juarez Journal 6 In the article "The American Dream: Dead, Alive, or on Hold?" by author Brandon King, he talks about how the American Dream is a matter of perspective in the eyes of the individual person. He states in his article that he believes, "planning for the future by saving more and enacting policies that sustain economic growth are what will keep the American Dream alive" (616). The author supports his beliefs throughout the entirety of his article while also incorporating various counter arguments. For instance, "Many liberal economists and activists say that the American Dream is dead, but I say that it's more alive and important than everand that it is the key to climbing out of the Great Recession, overcoming inequality, and achieving true prosperity" (611). He also explains that we as a nation, instead of trying to mess with the companies that create jobs and stimulate growth in America, we should believe that we can overcome adversity and be successful. I could come to terms with the fact that America has many different conclusions on what the American Dream should be. It went from one set belief, to many. Author Brandon King quotes in his article what the meaning of the American Dream came to be during the Great Drepression by James Trustlow Adams. Adams said, "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability and achievement, regardless of social class or circumstances of birth" (610-611). I feel like now just like what was said in this article, that the American Dream is a much simpler fact of being able to live comfortably without the struggle of living day by day poorly and suffering. From my personal experience, I feel like planning ahead for the future, striving towards reaching your own goals, and making the best of what American allows you is all you need to be successful . In the article "America Remains the World's Beacon of Success", author Tim Roemer expresses a little bit on how as a former US ambassador to India, his travels and getting to know a little bit about the similar values other countries share with our own. Tim Roemer states "I learned that America is still deeply admired around the world and the place where many people want to live out their dreams" (618). He goes on to say that Americans think we are in such a bad place, when everyone on the outside of the US would still consider us to be the place they want to go and thrive. He not only points out that America isn't in such a bad place as we might believe it to be, but that our adversaries and other world powers are going through either the same or worse then we are. He points out many key ups America brings to the world such as "The United States has the largest and most technologically powerful economy in the world" (619) and "inventions spring from our labs, universities and garage s, and eventually will propel world growth" (619). He ends by basically saying that we should not worry too much, America is "worth fighting for" (621), backed on his experience as an ambassador. This article pretty much backed how I feel about America as a whole. Being in the military and just growing up in general, you come to see that despite the trials and tribulations of life in America, we continue to strive forward. We continuously and constantly remain the top of the world as a force to be reckoned with as a military power, in technology, our economy, and many other things. Things may seem bad to most and have been worse. Resilience has been the face of our country since its founding. In the article, author Tim Roemer says "During a meeting in Mumbai with three dozen business millionaires I asked a simple question: Which market would you most like to access? Almost unanimously, the answer was the United States" (620). That I feel goes to show despite what the world sees on the television, internet, or in the world news about our economic situation or whatever; we are

Origins essays Creationism vs. Evolution, the argument disputed by more scientists, more paleontologists and more everyday people than probably any other argument since the dawn of man. Who is right? Do the theories and evidence of evolutionists have the right answers or do the faith and facts of creationists hold the answers? What is creationism? Creationism is the idea that all forms of life, and particularly humans, were independently created by a willful act on the part of God or a deity. Whats wrong with creationism? That depends on what form of creationism you are referring to. There are several forms of creationism that all differ from one another. None are really scientific, though not all are unscientific to the same degree. Old earth creationism holds that the earth was created a very long time ago and populated with life more-or-less shown in fossil records. However, new species of organisms were created one-by-one over all that time, each the result of a separate creative act by the Deity. This theory is not scientific, because it cannot be falsified; any evidence can be made to fit into it. Sequential creationism says that the earth is old, and the major groups of fossils do reflect organisms living at different times in earths history. However, the major mass extinction represent t imes when all living things were destroyed, and then the earth was repopulated by a new creative act. The last extinction happened recently, after which the current animals and humans were created, but this isnt scientific either. Sequential creationism simply doesnt agree with the evidence. None of these mass extinctions wiped out all life. In many cases, we find the same species of organisms both before and after the extinctions. Pick a Quote from the Book To Kill a Mockingbird Essay During the depression in Alabama, many people, no matter what race, were encountering hard times. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Haper Lee, Scout learns life lessons through experiences throughout her childhood. In her community and her household, Scout watches and interacts with all kinds of people. In the book, Scout learns something new about the people of Maycomb in each chapter and realizes that people are more than what they perceive to be by interacting with three main characters in the novel, Atticus, Mr. Cunningham, and Boo Radley. In the beginning of the book, Scoutââ¬â¢s interpretation of these characters changed throughout the story. At the beginning of the book, Scoutââ¬â¢s dad, Atticus, was not like the fun hunting loving father that the other kids had. Atticus was a fifty year old lawyer that didnââ¬â¢t have time or energy to even play football with Scout brother, Jem. Scout felt like she had nothing to brag or be proud of her father about that is shown in this quote, because his daily life was either in the office or into a book. ââ¬Å"If your father was thirty youââ¬â¢d find life quite differentâ⬠ââ¬Å"It sure would. Atticus canââ¬â¢t do anythingâ⬠¦. â⬠(Lee 120) Later on in the story, Scout and Jem see a stray crazy dog. Atticus is asked to shoot it. Scout not knowing that her dad was the best shooter in Maycomb had doubts of letting her dad shoot the dog. Atticus shot the dog on the first bullet. ââ¬Å"When we went home I told Jem weââ¬â¢d really have something to talk about at school on Monday. â⬠(Lee 130) Scoutââ¬â¢s first impression of her dad in the beginning of the story changed when she found that she could be proud of her father for being the best shooter in Maycomb. Another main character in the novel was Mr. Cunningham who was a farmer and one of Atticus clients. Atticus was also representing Tom Robinson, who was a black man being prosecuted for rape by Bob Ewell. Bob Ewell had gathered a bunch of men to go down to the jail house to kill Tom Robinson. Scout, who was hiding and watching everything from afar, could not recognize any of the men. Later on when she ran through the men to Atticus she then recognized one man, and that was Mr. Cunningham. At the beginning of the novel, Atticus told Scout that Mr. Cunningham was a good honest hard working man that did not take anything from anyone unlike Mr. Ewell. After she realized what was taking place at the jail house and what the men were there to do, she had doubts about Mr. Cunningham being the good man that her father had told her about at the beginning of the novel. Lastly, Boo Radley probably impacted Scout the most in what she learned. At the beginning of the novel, Scout, Jem, and Dill all were curious of the monster that lived at the Radleyââ¬â¢s house. He was always kept away and never came out. All kinds of stories about Boo Radley had been told as Scout grew up, made by different people in her community. Scout was so scared of Boo that she would run past his house every time she would pass it. The town would not even eat the fruit off the trees by their house because they believed Boo had poisoned them. It was obvious that Boo Radley had a bad rep in the town. Later on in the story, Scout and Jim find out someone is leaving them things in a tree hole. They start to believe it is Boo, who was leaving it for them, but they are still not convinced that Boo is safe. Later on while Miss Maudieââ¬â¢s house was burning and Scout was watching it from afar, someone had put a blanket on her. They come to the conclusion it was Boo Radley and are confused why he would do so. When Boo Radley had saved them from Mr. Ewell in the last few chapters of the book, it had become clear that Boo was not bad at all but afraid of the outside world beyond his house. Scoutââ¬â¢s original perception of Boo Radley was all wrong because of the people she interacted with day to day. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Haper Lee, Scout learns life lessons through experiences throughout her childhood. Three main characters in this book impacted her life the most. Atticus, Mr. Cunningham, and Boo Radley showed Scout to not judge a book by its cover. Not everyone is who they first perceive to be. Like Atticus said ââ¬Å"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view ââ¬â until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. â⬠(Lee 30) Atticus was right, Scout did not really know any of these people until she put herself in their place and saw who they really were.

Consider how Seanus Heany provides us with a view of his childhood in the following poems: Digging, Death of a Naturalist, follower, blackberry picking, The barn and mid term break Sheanus Heany was born in 1939 on a farm in County Derry, Northern Ireland. His poetry is based on the landscape in his farm from his childhood. In his life there is one key feature that changed him from the rest of his family. This was the level of education that he obtained. He went to a decent school unlike his family that enabled him to write and not farm. He is currently a professor of poetry at Oxford. There are two large symbolic features in his poetry. Firstly, the danger in the countryside could be said to represent the danger in Northern Island at the time. Secondly, there is a strong sense of division in his family, which could be linked with Heany growing up in a divided country. His first poem in the Death of a Naturalist is very important. The purpose of it is to symbolise and introduce his circumstances. 'Between my finger and thumb the squat pen rests'. Look at this first sentence. It is telling you he is a writer. He is telling you that the pen rests. This means that he is comfortable with it. In a way he is saying that the pen belongs in his hand. Then he goes on to write 'snug as a gun'. A gun is a weapon. Something used for destruction which poetry is not. But, If you look closer you can see that maybe the pen has destroyed something. Heany was brought up in a Irish rural family. He is expected to become a farmer. In this way the pen has taken something away from him. It has changed the relationship with his family and lengthened the gap between them. Throughout nearly each poem there seems to be a barrier. Here it is the window, 'under my window'. Heany is doing mental work while his father is doing physical. Here is an example of how Heany and his father are different. 'My father digging I look down'. Even Heany's vision of his father from 20 years is one of digging. His father is natural with the farm work. When he is digging he is smooth and it is a harmonious movement. 'Bends low twenty years away stooping in rhythm through potato drills where he was digging'. Boys vs. Girls
Commonsense beliefs about boys and girls are not arbitrary. According to Archer and Lloyd (2002), they are associated with coherent ways of understanding the world in which we live, which for many centuries have been presented to each succeeding generation in the form of religious truths. The following little experiment demonstrates one situation where girls have outdone boys. Three boys and three girls were asked to kneel on the floor with their legs together by their high school teacher.All of them were made to bend forward and put their elbows up against their knees. Lipstick containers were placed upright at the end of the six young peopleââ¬â¢s fingers. Then, they were made to kneel up straight with their legs still together, with hands clasped behind their backs above their waists. They were then told to keep their arms and legs in their position while leaning forward, knock the lipstick container over their noses and return to the kneeling-up position. The observation was t hat girls can do it while boys canââ¬â¢t.The reason that this happened is because girls tend to have more body weight in the lower half of their bodies than boys do so they can balance better. But this little story/experiment does not prove that girls are better than boys. There are just some things that girls perform better than boys, AND vice versa. For instance, boys are observed to do significantly better than girls at mathematics, and understand relationships in the physical world better than the opposite sex (Archer and Lloyd, 2002).Conversely, girls are better at processing language than boys, which goes a long way toward explaining why girls overall have better communication than their gender counterparts. All of these examples and the experiment stated above just means that girls and boys are different. Differences do not imply an order of rank. Oranges and apples are different, but that doesnââ¬â¢t mean oranges are better than apples. Ovaries and testicles are differ ent, but that doesnââ¬â¢t mean that one is better than the other. Boys vs. Girls Boys and Girls had always been perceived to be greatly different from each other. It has been stereotypically observed that when the doctor shouted, ââ¬Å"It's a baby boy,â⬠the nurse will wrap him around a blue cloth while on the other hand when the doctor declares, ââ¬Å"It's a baby girl,â⬠a pink cloth will then be wrapped around her. But aside from the usual determining colors associated with boys and girls, what other factors set both genders apart and make them distinct? According to Armin Brott, baby boys are slightly heavier and longer than girls at birth.This is why many first-time mothers spend longer labor hours and it ultimately leads to higher birth trauma resulting to more irritable actions among the boys than the girls (Brott, 2008). He also adds that boys are more inclined in a more energetic and rough games as compared to the girls who like to pretend and mimic (Brott, 2008). In accordance to this perception, Leonard Sax, a doctor and a psychologist asser ts that boys and girls differ in their view of the surroundings and environment.In studying the outlook of the girls, he showed an image with ââ¬Å"a girl, a dress, a pet, the sun, flowers, rainbow and all those colors,â⬠which has been the same kind of drawing girls all over the world has drawn (Selliot, 2008). On the other hand, he presented an image of ââ¬Å" bloody red battle scenes, gray rocket ships and black speeding vehicles,â⬠all of which are the same content of a boy's painting (Selliot, 2008). Furthermore, Brott observed that the girls take in greater sensory than boys wherein they can taste more, and tend to exhibit a greater need to be touched.There are actually more differences associated to the two genders. However, it is really difficult to identify who is greater or more superior than the other because as observed in the above comparison, both have their own unique personalities and inclinations which help develop their skills and perception in the thin gs around them.
